CME welcomes the European Parliament’s ENVI report on the ESPR  recognising the second-hand classifieds industry’s key contribution to the circular economy

Brussels, 15 June, 2023. Classifieds Marketplaces Europe (CME) welcomes the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) report adopted on 15 June by the European Parliament Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI), as it acknowledges the role the second-hand classifieds industry plays in promoting sustainable production and consumption, as well as in the development of new circular business models, and excludes second-hand products from the scope.

Carolin Wehrhahn, chair of CME and Director of EU Public Affairs at Adevinta, says: “The adoption of the ENVI report today is an important step forward towards facilitating more comprehensive information about products in Europe, which will boost the supply and demand for sustainable goods. To ensure that our members’ online marketplaces can continue to play an active role in the green transition by fostering the sale of second-hand goods, it is essential that the ENVI committee clarified today that second-hand products remain excluded from the scope by not having to comply with ecodesign requirements.”

CME Members are looking forward to a swift agreement between the institutions and are committed to working closely with the European Commission and other stakeholders to ensure that the Digital Product Passports will encourage the reuse and resale of goods by consumers on our platforms, while empowering citizens to strengthen the circular economy in local communities across Europe.
