Classifieds Marketplaces Europe (CME) Unveils EU2030 Roadmap
Brussels, 30 January 2024. On 30 January, Classifieds Marketplaces Europe (CME), a coalition representing Europe’s foremost online second-hand marketplaces, brought together a varied audience of EU policymakers, civil society, and industry representatives for the launch of its EU2030 Roadmap.
Europe stands at a critical juncture in history, the urgent need to address climate change calls for a transformative approach to our existing economic models. During this event, speakers highlighted the crucial role that online second-hand marketplaces have in enabling the twin green and digital transitions which are reshaping our societies and economies.
Petra Wikström, Senior Director of Public Policy at Schibsted and CME Chair said: “As the urgency to combat climate change intensifies, CME is stepping forward as a leader in advocating for a circular economy through the promotion of second-hand trade.”
“Policymakers should adopt a comprehensive strategy for promoting second-hand trade, boost second-hand businesses, and align future rules without creating barriers to second-hand trade and innovation.”
Panelists discussed upcoming circular economy trends that may shift policy priorities for the next legislative mandate (2024-2029), as well as actions needed to ensure the EU policy framework continues driving competitiveness and innovation in the sector.
Speakers included John Wante, Member of the cabinet of Belgian Environment Minister Zakia Khattabi, Neva Nahtigal, Director, Reuse and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises, MEP Sara Matthieu, MEP Sirpa Pietikäinen and William Neale, Adviser for Circular Economy at the European Commission.
Business representatives, including Amandine de Souza, General Manager Leboncoin- Adevinta, Serdar Akin, Chief Product Officer at OLX and Marianne Gybels, Senior Director Sustainability at Vinted also pushed European policymakers to take crucial steps in their upcoming mandate to establish an EU policy framework that enhances competitiveness and fosters innovation in the tech and second-hand sector.
